What an amazing week. We vacationed with our 2 children at Black Bear Lodge and could not have been happier. Our only disappointment was that we did not book the cabin for 2 weeks. Every detail was impeccable...furnishings, linens, kitchen amenities, location. But the best part was the view. We had our breath taken away when we saw it upon our arrival.

Wow! From the moment we arrived, we were blown away! What an amazing location and view. The house was gorgeous and the attention to detail makes this an amazing place to stay. We have been coming to this area for 12 years, every summer, and have stayed in many nice homes and cabins. Black Bear Lodge, with the detail, the hospitality, the view and the down home feeling - is at the top of the list. We especially enjoyed walking in and popping the cork on the nice bottle of wine to celebrate our arrival - very nice touch! Thank you, we will be back!

Black Bear Lodge is a 3800+ square foot knotty pine paneled log cabin, comprising two main floors and a loft. It was completed in the fall of 2008 and welcomed its first guests in December 2008. It sits at an elevation of approximately 4000’ and, from virtually every room, has unsurpassed and unobstructed majestic views of the mountain ranges and valleys as far away as forty miles to the north.

The main floor contains the spacious post-and-beam Great Room with soaring ceilings, a window wall open to the wrap-around covered deck overlooking the distant mountains, a wood-burning stone fireplace, game table, and a cozy sitting area for the wall-mounted 46” flat screen HDTV with a six speaker Blueray surround sound system for BDs, DVDs or CDs as well as an Ipod docking station to play your personal music collection. Just off the great room is the commodious gourmet kitchen with honed granite counter tops, abundant cabinet space and top-of-the-line built in stainless appliances, including a four burner gas cook top and oven, and a large prep island with built-in microwave and additional seating. The adjacent dining room was designed to seat eight comfortably around a large oak farm table. From the kitchen, you can enter the windowed laundry room with modern front-loading washer and dryer. Also on the main floor is a powder room and a very large master bedroom with king bed, private en suite master bath, raised pine ceiling and direct access to the covered back deck.

Imagine yourself resting comfortably in the softness of the cushions in the great room, your favorite book in hand, the soothing warmth from the crackling fireplace, the snow covered mountains out your window reminding you of another place and time, the quiet images brought on by the surround sound stereo, the smell of baking in the nearby kitchen. As they say,,,it doesn’t get much better than this!

On the second floor is the loft, reserved for another master bedroom suite with a log frame queen bed nestled under twin skylights in the pine-paneled vaulted ceiling, and a very private en suite master bath containing a separate glass-enclosed stall shower and a raised Kohler Airjet soaking tub with 110 air jets to soothe both body and mind.

The lower level has voluminous 9 ½ foot ceilings and contains an additional spacious and beautifully-appointed country chic master bedroom with a queen bed and comfortable sitting area, a fourth bedroom for the kids with foosball table,  and two sets of bunk beds, one with two twins, and the other with a twin on top, double on the bottom and there is even a trundle that pulls out with one more twin; and a large master-style bathroom with double vanity and glass-enclosed tub/shower and, to relax and entertain the guests, an enormous, deluxe recreation room with a Minnesota Fats pool table, a 52” flat screen HDTV and its own private covered deck with sumptuous hot tub overlooking the distant mountains. Who could ask for more in a North Carolina mountain retreat?

Each of the cabins' bathrooms has a granite vanity top with two sinks and rustic cross-handled faucet sets and antique barnwood-framed mirror above. Each also has an enclosed toilet room for the ultimate in comfort and privacy.

The cabins’ ample heating and air conditioning systems have three separate zones, each with its own thermostat, so that each living area can be regulated to achieve the desired climate for your personal comfort.

The floors of the cabin are made of rustic wide-plank knotty yellow pine that have been carefully stained and oiled to remind you of days long gone when mountain homes were crafted entirely by hand from available materials. In keeping with this spirit of self-sufficiency the mantel over the fireplace, the sofa table in the great room, the serving shelf in the dining room and the small shelf in the lower hallway all were hand-crafted by a local artisan from a tall, regal cherry tree that was felled to make room for the cabin.

Black Bear Lodge has paved access until approximately the last two miles, which alternate between pavement and gravel.

For larger groups, consider renting this cabin with nearby Van Beek's Peak or  Farallon.

Depending on the home, 4WD, chains or sometimes both may be required when visiting the mountains in winter. Access to this home may not be suitable for vehicles with rear wheel drive, limited ground clearance, or motorcycles even during summer months.  We are happy to help you find the home with the access you are most comfortable with, any time of year!

The cabin was beautiful, and the view was gorgeous all the time, even when mist covered the hills one day. The great room soars two stories high, with warm pine all around--a perfect environment for our long games of Monopoly and our collaborative jigsaw puzzling. Our father, who has limited mobility, had to negotiate only the front steps, after which he could go to the great room, kitchen, deck, and his bedroom suite without taking any steps. The bathrooms are luxurious, with elegant fittings, piles of thick towels, enclosed toilets, and endless hot water from an in-line heater. (A few grab bars in the main-floor shower and toilet room would be great--installed into the studs, since the other types are dangerous--but of course you don't bill the cabin as appropriate for people with mobility issues). The kitchen and pantry were very well outfitted and easy for three people to work in at a time. (We rolled the two slippery throw-rugs aside, no problem.) The beds were extremely comfortable, with lots of pillows, and the bedrooms had nice, thick curtains to shut out light. We loved sitting on the wraparound deck, listening to the chorus of birds, and on the Fourth of July we saw fireworks below us, far away, all over the valley. The road on which the cabin sits is quiet and tree-covered, a great place to walk so long as you don't mind some hills. We met neighbors and walked with them some days. We especially loved the single-lane gravel route to the cabin, which passes by several lovely old buildings and cuts right through a spic-and-span farm whose goats, chickens, and rabbits unconcernedly ambled in front of our car. I swear one brown rabbit sprawled right in the road and cheerfully waited for us. The Lowes Supermarket in Boone is very good, and you can find some groceries as close as the Dollar General in Foscoe, which has a produce section. Good coffee is in Banner Elk and Boone, as are various restaurants. And of course, the Blue Ridge Parkway can fill many an afternoon.

We are from way way down in South Florida so each year we travel to allow our four kids (ages 17,14,11,&6) to experience the seasons. Our family stayed a week at Black Bear Lodge January 8-13th 2018 and we had a wonderful experience. The cabin was not hard to find and our GPS located it correctly. The roads leading up to the home were a bit scary with tight winding turns at high elevations and a one lane bridge, but there was no snow or ice on the roads. The cabin was clean and beautifully decorated and the view off the back porch was awesome. The weather was rainy for two days so we didn't get to ski or snow tube this trip, but we all had a great time relaxing. We took little trips out to visit antique shops, mast general store, mystery hill, foggy mountain gem mine, and hiked to see the elk river falls. We stopped at a food lion grocery store and a subway for lunch and everyone we met was super friendly. Overall the trip was perfect, the cabin was perfect, and we wouldn't change a thing except the weather:)Thank you for another great experience!

We spent most of our waking hours on the deck gazing at the mountains. When inside, we kept stumbling across unique decorative touches---in a thoughtfully stocked home. This is a treasure of a property to rent--we will be back!

We have stayed here 2 times this year and both were so wonderful. We spent 5 days there this spring and again this fall. The cabin is so large and clean. The view will take your breath away. Loved getting up in the morning and having coffee on the deck. At night without all the lights the stars are so beautiful! This is a place that we could only dream about, but being able to rent it every now and then is a dream come true. Thanks for having such a great place where we can bring our 4 legged family member with us. This really makes a difference and keeps the family together. Thank you again for the honor of renting this cabin!

Your cabin made having three households under one roof effortless! Every detail had been thought out and the attention to detail was just amazing!
